How to Compare European University Programmes Beyond Rankings
Compare degree recognition, academic fit, curriculum, assessment, support and full study costs with a programme-level decision table.

Two university courses with similar names can provide different training. One may emphasise research methods, another professional projects, and another a particular industry. A ranking cannot tell you whether your qualification meets the entry requirements or whether the required modules match your goals.

Check what qualification you will receive
Record the institution, awarding body, qualification level, credits, study mode and campus. Check recognition for the purpose that matters to you: further study, employment or a regulated profession. These are not automatically the same decision. ENIC-NARIC’s professional-recognition guidance explains why regulation matters.
Make a comparison table with evidence
| Decision | Programme A and B evidence |
|---|---|
| Academic fit | Required previous subjects and accepted qualifications |
| Learning | Compulsory modules, specialist options and methods training |
| Assessment | Examinations, projects, dissertation or clinical work |
| Practical conditions | Language, attendance, campus and placement terms |
| Cost | Full-duration tuition, living costs and payment timing |
| Support | Published academic, disability, housing and career services |
Use direct links to current course notices. If a module is optional, check whether it actually runs every year and whether places are limited. If an internship is advertised, ask whether the institution allocates it or expects you to secure it yourself.
Compare requirements before spending on applications
For a specialist master’s, map your transcript to the published prerequisites. A course may need particular quantitative or laboratory subjects even if it accepts a broad degree title. Where you cannot establish the match, send the admissions office a concise question with the relevant module description.
Use rankings as one input
Rankings can help you discover institutions, but they use methodologies and categories that may not reflect your chosen course. Ask what practical decision a ranking changes for you. If the course content, recognition or cost does not work, a higher overall position cannot repair that mismatch.
Test the complete cost
Imagine one illustrative option lasts twelve months and another eighteen. Comparing annual tuition alone can reverse the apparent advantage. Add the extra living months and any additional compulsory fees. Also distinguish a confirmed scholarship from an award you intend to apply for.
Our comparison tool helps you enter the same cost categories for each course. It does not identify the best university. The Italian official programme portal, linked from the foreign ministry’s study guidance, and each host institution’s course page are starting points for checking Italian options. Verify the actual award, modules and fees in the university’s current notice; a portal listing alone does not confirm admission eligibility or professional recognition.
How should I choose when two offers are close?
Write down the two or three differences that matter most to your goal, such as a specific required module, an affordable housing offer or the assessed final project. Explain the choice in one paragraph using evidence. Avoid an arbitrary score that hides a missing prerequisite.
Explore our subject guides and ask for support if you need help interpreting a published course requirement.
