Italy Scholarships for International Students: Compare the Routes
Understand regional Italian aid, university awards and government scholarships, then compare the actual call, evidence, coverage and payment timing.

Table of ContentsShow / Hide
Start an Italian scholarship search by identifying who makes the award. Regional right-to-study support, a university merit award and a national government scholarship are different routes. They can use different applications, applicant categories and evidence. A claim that every international student receives one fixed “DSU scholarship” hides the decisions you actually need to make.
- Identify the scheme
- Read the current call
- Plan remaining costs
Compare three kinds of support
| Route | What to inspect | Common planning error |
|---|---|---|
| Regional study support | The responsible regional body and its annual call | Using another region’s amount or deadline |
| Institutional award | The university’s eligibility and selection notice | Assuming admission automatically includes funding |
| Government scholarship | The official scheme, eligible applicant list and study categories | Assuming all nationalities and degree levels qualify |
The University of Milan regional scholarship page illustrates a university-specific regional route. ER.GO explains its economic and academic requirements and distinctions in award status. These are starting points, not interchangeable schemes.
Read coverage as carefully as the headline amount
Write down what is cash, what is a service and what is a fee reduction. Note whether housing or meals affect the payment and whether the amount depends on your classification. Then record when the money is expected and what evidence is required before it is released. A large award paid later cannot necessarily meet an immediate tuition instalment.
As an illustrative planning exercise, imagine an offer with a tuition reduction and a later living-cost payment. Your first cash plan may still need travel, the housing deposit and several months of rent. Keep those costs in the Italy study cost calculator until the payment conditions are satisfied. This example describes timing, not an actual award.
Build a scheme-specific evidence folder
Use the current call to identify academic records, household financial documents, translations and any nomination. Where an instruction is unclear, ask the award body a precise question and retain its answer. A missing financial document may be more consequential than a polished motivation letter. Never alter a record to make it fit a threshold.
Check the academic year and renewal rules
A 2026–2027 call is evidence for that scheme and year. It does not confirm a later deadline or funding amount. Look for the rules on first-year progress, subsequent-year applications, repayment and incompatible awards before accepting support. For the government route, use the foreign ministry’s official scholarship page.
Questions students should resolve
Can I apply to more than one scheme?
Read the compatibility rules of each call. Do not assume that two applications can produce two payments you may keep together.
Does a scholarship secure my admission or visa?
No. Treat the award, university admission and immigration permission as separate decisions with their own requirements.
Finish with the scholarship preparation pre-checker and the Italy country guide. The useful outcome is a documented funding plan, not an unsupported promise of a fully funded place.
Current-cycle funding check
The MAECI scholarship page lists 26 March 2026 at 2 p.m. CET as the 2026–2027 application deadline. That date has passed; the page is not evidence of an open application window for a later year. For regional support, ER.GO distinguishes meeting eligibility requirements from receiving an assignment. Keep an unconfirmed payment out of your reliable funding total.
